Pop Conscious

| with Malayna Dawn and Stacy Macris Ros | Monday at 2 p.m. CT
Pop Conscious

Program Overview

Pop culture is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as “modern popular culture transmitted via mass media and aimed particularly at younger people.” But can it be meaningful? Spiritual, even? The hosts of Pop Conscious think it can be, and that it can be fun to explore too. Malayna Dawn and Stacy Macris Ros will be your amateur cultural anthropologists, helping you connect entertainment and enlightenment in your daily life, with the help of team member Michele Coles and a bevy of fabulous guests.

Join us as we examine why classic movies continue to resonate with us, what music intrigues us, what television delights us, what our favorite superheroes say about our archetypal makeup, and how we can use it all to improve our lives.

~ Malayna and Stacy broadcast from Unity of the Oaks in Thousand Oaks, California.
~ Michele Coles joins us from Unity Spiritual Center in Westlake, Ohio.

~ Our fabulous announcer-man, Bob Bendick, can be hired for commercial and animation voice-overs. Go to bbatalent.com/book for more information.

    Episode Description:
How do we know what we truly value in our lives? One way is to look at where and how we spend our money. When we put our money on something, we are investing in it. Another way is to look at how we spend our time. Are we watching TV that enriches us and makes us feel like better people? Are we contributing to the box office of a film that enriches our world? How do we invest our energy? Do we choose the things that really matter? Are we leaking energy on things that don’t really matter to us, but take up all our time? How much do we value ourselves in the equation of life? Join Stacy and Malayna as they come up with examples from pop culture and life!

As we get older, we get a glimpse of how society functions, and as teens, we learn to emulate and identify with images that reflect how we want to be seen. But at some point, we limit our possibilities by overidentifying with the examples we see, and underidentifying with the underlying Truth of Spirit expressing in, through, and as each of us. A great example is Hedy Lamarr, who would be celebrating her 101st birthday today. A successful actress in 1930s and '40s Hollywood, her scientific curiosity led to inventions intended to help the Allies during World War II, but we now use them as the basis of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth communications. As an adult, she put her communications degree to use by working behind-the-scenes (and in front!) in radio, television, film, print media, and live events, both in the United States and her 12-year home of Sri Lanka. She has done a ton of positive writing for the Web and has authored a spiritual adventure novel: Echoes Across Time. Learn more about her work at malaynadawn.com.

Stacy Macris Ros is a Certified Spiritual Educator and the Teen Consultant to the Southwest Unity Region Youth and Family Ministry. A lifelong Unity student who also grew up in the Los Angeles' suburbs, Stacy has been featured in a music video, worked at her college radio station, and studied broadcast journalism before pursuing her interest in natural health. She has a bachelor’s in dietetics, a master's in public health, and is a Certified Reiki Master. She and Malayna met at Unity Kids Camp at the age of 10, then as teens grew to be regional leaders of the Youth of Unity.
